The counties are among nine that will share in more than $1 million in federal funding to implement medication-assisted treatment for inmates with opioid-use disorders.

UPDATE: Bucks County officials say there is a plan to assess incoming inmates without prescriptions for participation in medication assisted treatment while incarcerated, but there is no timeline for implementationCurrently MAT protocols are only regularly used for incoming pregnant inmates with substance abuse disorders

Bucks County soon will allow some incoming inmates access to a common narcotic used to treat opiate addiction and reduce withdrawal symptoms, as well as expanding medication-assisted treatment for others.

The protocol change affects inmates who enter the jail with a valid prescription for the drug buprenorphine, according to county officials.
